Legends of Motorsports

Motorsports have been around for more than a century, with organized races occurring in the late 19th century. During this time, legendary competitors have been established in the major competitions. In this article, we shall highlight the accomplishments of four motorsports legends from different popular auto racing competitions.

Carlos Sainz – World Rally Championship (WRC)

Carlos Sainz is a rallying legend who’s considered as one of the greatest ever to grace the sport. The Spaniard began his rallying career in 1980, and in 1987 he joined the world rally championship as a driver for Ford. Carlos is known for his intensity as a competitor and for being a perfectionist. Nicknamed ‘El Matador’, he notched two world championships in his distinguished career. His accomplishments include the record for most WRC starts, 26 race wins, and 96 podium finishes. After retirement, he went on to have success in the Dakar rally, winning the competition three times.

Michael Schumacher – Formula 1

There is no doubt that Michael Schumacher is the greatest ever driver in Formula 1’s history. His 19-year Formula 1 career is a car racing masterclass for his dominating performances. He holds multiple records in the sport including 7 world championships, most consecutive titles (5), most race wins (91) and most podium finishes (155).

Valentino Rossi – Moto GP

Valentino Rossi, affectionately known as ‘The Doctor’, is a motorsport legend and the most successful rider in Moto GP history. The Italian, who is as charismatic as he is talented, still holds a number of Moto GP records including: most podium finishes (221), most race wins in consecutive years (15) and the most race starts (348).

Dale Earnhardt Sr. – NASCAR

Dale Earnhardt Sr. is recognized as one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time. Before his tragic death in 2001, he had won 7 Winston cups and had achieved 76 wins in his 22-season career.
