Since 1976 AVALON has played host to
In November 1976 Corio Shire President Mr. Mike Parks cut the ribbon to open Avalon Raceway which was dream
come true for twin brothers Doug(Dec.) and Norm Drew. Who both raced actively at Torquay, Colac, Brooklyn other speedway 60’s early 70’s. With closure of Geelong Businessmen set about purchasing land build what is now Raceway. World
Champions, been the scene for numerous State and National Champions as
well as feature event for all classes.
Some of which are now blue ribbon fixtures on the speedway calendar.
Along the way a number of changes have taken place. Originally the crash
wall was made of sheet steel which at the time was a first for
Australia, but when the circuit was altered in early 90’s out went the
sheet and was replaced with concrete panels. Spectator mounds have been
increased several times in a effect to give fans a better view of the
action.
Some of the events to gain blue ribbon status in Australian Speedway are
the
Presidents Cup for Sprintcars, this event started as a local event and
has been gaining is credibility ever since. Some of the sports best
names have their names on this trophy, including Bill Barrows, Garry
Rush, Max Dumesny, George Tatnell and Ian Lewis. Max Dumesny being the
most prolific winner of the event with three to his name. The USA
connection is strong with this event.
Tim Green became the first American t win the event before fellow
countrymen Joey Saldana, Chad Kennenah and Steve Kinser took home the
trophy. The annual WSS events always create a great deal of interest as
does the Good Friday Sprintcar race which is Round 1 of the annual
Easter Sprintcar Trail. Super Sedans major race for the season is the K
Rock Cup which is the must win event of the Victorian Super Sedan
calendar.
While Modified Production Sedans signature event is the Westcoast
Classic, itself is one Victoria’s longest continued running event.
Speedcars, V8Dirt Modifieds, Street Stocks, AMCA’s all have feature
events at the Place for Pace, along with some specialty events like Demo
Derbies, Go Karts and Monster Trucks make Avalon Raceway one of
Victoria’s leading oval tracks, which is a fitting reward for the dream
of two men in the 1970’s and their families today.
